Figure out what your kitchen island needs and then take a look at what Seats and Stools has to offer, from bucket stools to fully customizable Breuer chairs.
The kitchen island is where you chop vegetables, sort the mail, help with homework, and grab a quick breakfast. The right seating makes it a spot where people want to stay. At Seats and Stools, we have learned what works at the island and what does not. For comfort, focus on kitchen stools with backs and support, like our bucket stools or our Breuer Cesca bar stools. If you need something that can be stowed away, look at our backless stools. Below are some of our favorite kitchen island seating ideas, plus simple tips to help you choose stools that fit your space, your style, and your everyday life.

1. Go Classic With Breuer Cesca Bar Stools

Marcel Breuer designed the Cesca in 1928, and it still looks fresh today. The curved steel frame and woven cane seat give any kitchen design a light, open feel. At Seats and Stools, we import our Breuer components directly from Italy.
Our Classic Breuer Bar Stool has both a seat and a back, so it is comfortable for long meals. You can pick a chrome or vintage brass frame and choose cane, solid wood, or upholstered seats. It comes in 24-inch counter height and 28-inch bar height.
This style looks great next to marble countertops, white oak cabinets, and simple pendant lights. You can see every option in our Breuer Cesca Bar Stools collection.
2. Keep Things Open With Backless Stools

Backless stools are a smart pick for smaller kitchens. They slide all the way under the counter, which frees up extra space. They also keep the view across the room open, so the island does not feel crowded.
For a simple option, the Retro Single Ring Bar Stool 1 has a sturdy base and a 15-inch square seat. It is available in various seat materials and base colors, so you can find the perfect fit for your kitchen.
3. Create Comfort with Bucket Seats

If your family spends hours at the kitchen island, comfort matters most. Bucket seats wrap around your back and sides, so they feel more like a chair than a stool.
The High Back Bucket Bar Stool 1 has a tall back, a chrome ring base, and a 360-degree swivel. Swivel seats make it easy for guests to turn and move around.
For a lower back that tucks under the counter more easily, look at the Mid Height Bucket Bar Stool. You can browse every style in the Seats and Stools Bucket Bar Stools collection.
4. Bring In Warm Wood

Wood seating adds warmth to a kitchen full of stone and steel. It also pairs well with natural materials like a marble or granite top and wood open shelving.
Our Ladder Wood Bar Stool is made from solid beechwood. It comes in mahogany, cherry, or walnut, with a wood or upholstered seat.
The Vertical Slat Schoolhouse Bar Stool is another solid choice. Its dark wood finish stands out against white or light cabinets. See more styles in our Wooden Bar Stools collection.
5. Mix Metal and Wood

Can't decide between metal and wood? A metal frame with a wood seat or back works well in a modern kitchen that still needs some warmth. The Brody Bar Stool pairs a black metal frame with a natural wood seat and back.
6. Add a Pop of Color

Your kitchen stools can be the focal point of the room. A bright seat adds visual interest to a plain island. It also works as a contrast piece next to a painted island.
The Two-Tone Retro Double Ring Bar Stool with Back 1 has a chrome frame, a 360-degree swivel, and a two-color seat. The Retro Single Ring Bar Stool 1 is a simpler backless version.
Check our Fabrics and Colors page to see the full range of vinyl and fabric choices.
7. Match Your Island to Your Dining Area

In an open floor plan, your island seating and dining area sit side by side. Matching them makes the whole space feel planned.
Many of our stools come with a matching chair. The Miles Dining Chair and Bar Stool is one easy way to tie two spaces together. You can also browse our full Chairs collection to find dining chairs that fit your breakfast nook.
8. Design Your Own Breuer Cesca Chairs

If you want a custom look for your dining area, Seats and Stools offers a one-of-a-kind 3D Breuer Cesca Chair Configurator. You can choose your frame type, finish, and seat insert. Options include cane, wood, fabric, vinyl, and fully upholstered seats.
Pair your custom chairs with Breuer bar stools at the island for a look that feels connected across the whole room.
9. Refresh the Stools You Already Have
Sometimes, your current kitchen does not need new stools. It just needs new seats. If your frames are still in good shape, a replacement seat can bring your chairs back to life.
We make replacement seats and backs for many classic and bucket-style chairs. Shop our Bucket Chair and Stool Replacement Seats or Breuer Cesca Chair Replacement Seats and Parts. If your stool no longer rotates smoothly, we also carry Swivel Plate Replacements.
Before you order, check our Measurement Guide to get the right fit for your existing island stools.
Before You Buy Your Bar Stools

Start With the Right Height
Before you think about color or style, measure your counter. The wrong height is the most common mistake people make with island seating.
Most kitchen islands fall into one of three groups:
- Counter Height: The counter sits about 36 inches off the floor. Look for counter stools with a seat height near 24 inches.
- Bar Height: The counter sits about 42 inches off the floor. Look for bar stools with a seat height near 28 to 30 inches.
- Table Height: The surface sits about 30 inches off the floor. At this height, the island works like a dining table, and regular dining chairs are the better fit.
A good rule is to leave about 10 to 12 inches between the top of the seat and the underside of the counter.
Plan Your Spacing
Crowded stools are uncomfortable. Plan for about 24 inches of counter length for each backless stool. Stools with arms or wide seats need more room, closer to 28 or 30 inches each.
Also think about the space behind the stools. People need room to pull a stool out, sit down, and walk past. Try to leave about 3 feet of open floor behind your seating area if you can.
Quick Tips
Here are a few simple things to keep in mind.
- Think About Who Sits There: Kids and older guests often do best with backs and footrests.
- Pick The Right Material: Choose vinyl for easy cleaning or fabric for a softer feel.
- Match Your Style: Chrome and cane feel modern, while wood feels warm and classic.
- Plan For The Long Run: Quality stools cost less over time because you replace them less often.
